1. Not Understanding the Target Audience
Mistake: Creating campaigns based on assumptions rather than data. Wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't include this one! 🙂
Why it’s
wrong: Without truly knowing your audience’s pain points, desires, and behaviors, marketing efforts often miss the mark.
2. Chasing Trends Without A Strategy
Mistake: Jumping on TikTok, AI tools, or memes just because they're "hot." I call this "bright, shiny thing" chasing.
Why it’s wrong: It leads to disjointed
branding and short-lived engagement if it's not aligned with your brand or audience. (and it's often not!)
3. Focusing Too Much on Acquisition
Mistake: Pouring budget into getting new customers while ignoring existing ones. Always amazes me how often I see this.
Why it’s wrong: It's more expensive to acquire
new customers than to retain current ones. Loyal customers also drive word-of-mouth growth.
4. Weak Value Propositions
Mistake: Using generic copy like “We’re the best in the business.” (still time today to register for my live webinar today at 2PM ET. You'll learn how to create a client-attracting message that tMUST be in place if you
want your website to generate clients.) [Request Access Here]
Why it’s wrong: This doesn't tell people why they should care. A value proposition must be clear, specific, and relevant to the
customer.
5. Measuring Vanity Metrics
Mistake: Obsessing over likes, impressions, or follower counts.
Why it’s wrong: This is an expensive obsession because the impression it creates gives you a false feeling of accomplishment. These often don’t correlate with actual business outcomes like leads, conversions, or
revenue.
6. Ignoring SEO Fundamentals
Mistake: Writing content without keyword research or proper structure.
Why it’s wrong: Even great content won’t be found without SEO. This limits organic visibility and traffic growth.
7. Over-Automating Without
Personalization
Mistake: Using automation tools to blast out generic emails or DMs.
Why it’s wrong: Don't know about you but this is an INSTANT delete for me. It alienates audiences and hurts brand trust. People can tell when they’re just a name in a database.
8. Poor Content Strategy
Mistake: Posting random content just to “stay active.” Hate to admit it but this was me at one point.
Why it’s wrong: Without a clear content plan tied to goals (awareness, engagement, conversion), content becomes noise.
9. Misaligned Brand Messaging
Mistake: Inconsistent tone, messaging, or visuals across platforms.
Why it’s wrong: It confuses customers and weakens brand recognition.
10. Not Testing or Iterating
Mistake: Launching campaigns and never revisiting performance or optimizing. What's the point?
Why it’s wrong:
Marketing is a dynamic process. Continuous A/B testing helps improve ROI and efficiency.
11. Over-Promising and Under-Delivering
Mistake: Using clickbait or exaggerated claims to get attention. This is a show stopper.
Why it’s wrong: It damages long-term trust and leads to high churn or refund rates.
12. Ignoring Customer Feedback
Mistake: Not leveraging reviews, surveys, or social listening. This is such an underused source valuable information.
Why it’s wrong: Customer feedback is gold for improving messaging, products, and services — ignoring it is a missed opportunity.
If your business is guilty of any of the mistakes above, pick one or two and work on getting stronger in those areas.
It's worth the effort!
