Is Email Marketing Dead? (Or Are Most People Just Doing It Wrong?)

Every few months, someone declares it: “Email marketing is dead.”

Check me if I'm wrong Scotty but it's usually right after they send a campaign… and hear....🦗.

Low opens.
No replies.
Zero sales.

So it’s easy to assume the channel is the problem.

But here’s the reality:

Email marketing isn’t dead.
 

BAD email marketing is.

The Real Problem Isn’t Email - It’s What Happens After the Opt-In

Most businesses put a ton of effort into getting leads:

They run ads.
They post on LinkedIn.
They optimize their website.

And then someone joins their list…and nothing really happens.

Maybe the subscriber gets:

• A generic welcome email
• The occasional newsletter
• A random promotion when there’s something to sell

That’s NOT email marketing.

That’s email neglect.

What Actually Makes Email Work

Email still works incredibly well - but only when it’s treated as a relationship-building system, not a broadcast tool.

FACT: When someone joins your list, they’re not ready to buy.

They’re thinking:

• “Is this relevant to me?”
• “Do I trust this person?”
• “Can they actually help me?”

If your emails don’t answer those questions over time, nothing happens.

But when they do…

Email becomes one of the most reliable revenue channels you have.

Why Most Email Lists Don’t Convert

It usually comes down to three issues:

1. No Clear Narrative

Every email feels disconnected.

There’s no progression… no journey… no movement toward a decision.

So subscribers stay stuck as passive readers.

2. No Trust-Building Structure

Most emails either:

• Try to sell too quickly
  or
• Stay too surface-level and never build real authority

I'm here to tell you...neither works.

Trust isn’t built through frequency.

It’s built through clarity, insight, and relevance.

3. No Conversion Pathway

Even when emails are good…there’s often no clear next step.

No natural progression from:

Reader → Engaged Prospect → Client

So interest never turns into action.

What High-Performing Email Marketing Actually Looks Like

When email is working properly, it does three things:

1. It sharpens the problem

Your reader starts to understand their situation better than they did before.

2. It reframes the solution

They begin to see that the way they’ve been thinking about the problem… isn’t quite right.

3. It creates forward motion

Each email moves them one step closer to taking action.

Not through pressure.

Through clarity and confidence.

Think of it as "holding your prospect's hand" as you lead them through your selling story. 

The Bigger Truth Most People Miss

An email list is not an asset by itself.

The SYSTEM behind it is.

Without structure, it’s just a collection of contacts.

With the right structure, it becomes:

• A trust-building engine
• A positioning tool
• A consistent source of qualified opportunities

A Quick Reality Check

If your email marketing isn’t producing results, ask yourself:

• Do my emails follow a clear progression?
• Am I building trust before trying to sell?
• Is there a natural next step in every message?

If the answer is no…

It’s not that email is dead.

It’s that your email system isn’t doing its job yet.

Final Thought

Email didn’t stop working.

People just got lazy with how they use it.
